The Portrait Shoot That Changed How I See Beauty: Sonia Vera

Some connections happen naturally. A few years ago, a mutual friend introduced me to Sonia Vera, a model and swimwear brand founder who had recently moved to New York. She didn’t know many people in the city yet, so our friend encouraged me to reach out. We met for coffee, talked for hours, and instantly connected.

As we got to know each other, Sonia shared her story with me. One day, without warning, she woke up paralyzed. A rare, one in a million condition changed her life overnight. Since then, she has used a wheelchair. But her presence, her strength, and her beauty never disappeared. If anything, they became even more powerful.

At some point during that conversation, she told me how much she missed being in front of the camera. So I said, let’s shoot. Not a polished production. Not a fantasy. Just something honest. Something that reflected who she truly is: the challenges, the resilience, and the incredible energy she carries every single day.

What we created together became more than portraits. They became a conversation about what beauty actually means.

Not perfection.
Not symmetry.
Not a life untouched by hardship.

Real beauty is presence. Persistence. The courage to keep showing up, even after life changes everything. We live in a time where images are increasingly generated, filtered, and polished into something almost unrecognizable. Sonia reminded me of what gets lost when we chase perfection. There is beauty in reality. There is power in vulnerability. And there are stories no algorithm will ever be able to invent.

This is one of them.
